Chapter 4

It is hard to walk normally for the day after that. Too embarrassed to explain to any servants that showed concern the real reason for my lack of movement. There is no sense in saying what Hakim did when I can say I did too much walking on the tour and was sore. The man who caused my pain keeping a straight face while I glare and Nazim picks me up to carry in his arms.

Though after that when I walk on my own again, Khaled announces he has to fly off somewhere for business. He promises this is normal for him, does it all the time. Would be back in a couple days.

I’m unsure about this as he adds while we eat breakfast he would take Hakim with across the country; maybe outside the border if things went well. A reassuring pat on my shoulder to declare it was nothing serious, just had a few people he wanted to talk with about trades.

This does not, in fact, help and I reply I don’t think that is safe, grabbing his hand. A glance at Nazim while he taps his fingers on the table. The prince looking at us both when he replies he has the royal guard at all times. No one would touch him. I ask about Nazim and me.

This gets a soft “Oh” and slow nod, leaning in to question why we are so worried when given the whole palace, and the protection that comes with it.

Nazim asks how we can be sure; he was the person who gave that. A dismissive wave the only response while we eat, the subject dropped as Khaled pulls out his phone to type on the screen.

A growing unease at his lack of caring has me turn to his guard, but he doesn’t react. Unmoving as always when not in the bedroom. I wonder if I should ask him about this...

After the meal Khaled says he has to make sure the jet is ready soon, but right now to come with him to a nearby meeting room. In there stands about ten guards, all in a line looking at the prince while he whispers to Hakim.

Ignoring the stares, he tells Nazim and me, “Pick a few and let them follow you for the couple of days we’re gone. They will go where you go, within reason.”

“I hope so,” I reply, already unsure how I like them walking around with guns when I bathe.

“Good, you know to keep that for when I get back.”

“But I don’t—“

“Amri, I can understand the temptation, but they have work to do. Besides, they realize you are mine, so they cannot so much as touch you unless to save your life.” The intense stare that goes with this shows that it wasn’t a lack of care that he didn’t want to talk about this at breakfast.

“We can wait a few days, we have each other.”

“Good,” his expression softens, and he holds my chin until I lean in. The hand gone, adds, “But keep some of that saved for me.
