Day Ten
âHeâll. Thatâs the message I received during the night from Gabby. I assume she meant hell? This girl and her encrypted texts. Yikes!â Sam read the message to Dale as they left the cabin and locked the door behind them.
âShe was probably implying hell. As in, being employed by Johnson is like working in hell.â Dale stated.
âLetâs play nice. Do you have everything packed?â She asked as both took their seats in the pickup. Sam started the engine and glanced over at Dale. âWeâll try this again. Bears, weâre only going to think of bears. Donât let me get sidetracked again. Nothing is keeping us from Hayden Valley today. Bears, got it?â
Dale shook his head in agreement. He was eager to learn more about the trade before venturing out on his own. This summer would lead him to choose a career in either research or wildlife management. âShouldnât we at least make a quick stop to see Gabby? She said sheâs leaving today. Plus, I want to see the look of defeat on Johnsonâs face. If they had caught something, Gabby wouldâve let us know by now. Her heâll text doesnât sound very promising. It shouldnât take long. Afterward, itâs all about the bears.â
They traveled up the familiar road on this overcast day. Sam adjusted the temperature in the truck as the heatwave finally broke. The chill in the morning air was a welcome relief for the two Wyomingites. Sam and Dale were more accustomed to six months of extreme winter weather. They drove in silence as each sipped their piping-hot coffee and waited for the caffeine to kick in. As Sam reflected on a day of research in the valley, Dale thought of the disparaging remarks he would voice to Johnson.
When the truck turned into the campground, heavily armed park employees stopped them. Sam and Dale flashed their identification badges and stared at the men as they moved the barricades before waving them through. Through her rearview mirror, Sam observed the same men replace the blockade. They stopped an SUV that attempted to sneak in with her. She slowed and watched as security forced them to back up and turn around.
Probably the press? Sam thought.
A familiar and disheartening flurry of activity unfolded before them after turning the corner that led to the campsites. Sam shook her head, wondering how this involved Johnson. She recognized the usual ensemble of emergency vehicles and park employees. Dale sat up in his seat and wedged his empty mug into the cup holder. Both were eager to learn more.
Before she parked the truck, Sam spotted a pickup next to the restroom building. It was the same one she had urged Johnson to move the previous day. She watched as a few men stood atop the roof, taking pictures or collecting items. Two others hauled canvas bags and climbed ladders as those on the ground helped steady the loads. From Samâs position, the site appeared to be in disarray. Bundles of extension cords draped over the side of the building.
