CHAPTER SEVEN
She and Grady split the sandwich in the break room at the hardware store, and since she was already there, she bought a few flowers to add to her garden. They werenât as high quality as the ones at the nursery, but she had already been jumpy and unsettled enough during this trip to town. She didnât need to go back there again alone, not right now.
After that, she went to the grocery store and stocked up on fresh food, relieved to be able to get produce, milk, and other necessities again. Bit by bit, her life was returning to normal. She might have been able to completely move on if it wasnât for Ethanâs murder. Even though the only thing tying it to her own mugging was that it had happened on the same day and in the same town, she couldnât shake the feeling that the two were related. It felt wrong for her to move on with her life when a man was dead. She knew, logically, that she couldnât do anything about it, but as she drove home and put her groceries away, she wracked her mind for any faint memory of the incident that might help her figure out who had attacked her. Had Linusâs hand on her shoulder felt so frightening because he was the one who attacked her, or was her poor mind just overstressed and making connections where there werenât any? Did Phoebe have anything to do with this at all, or was the womanâs presence at the coffee shop and connection to Ethan just another meaningless coincidence?
Having so many questions with no way to answer them was frustrating, but she buried her frustration during her work on the garden. The flowerbeds were really starting to come along. The shed was beginning to look a little better too, she had to admit. She and Grady had finished reinforcing the support beams over the weekend, and were ready to start on the siding.
He came over the next day to help her do just that. He brought some of his own tools over, and the two of them set to work on deconstructing the rotted siding boards on her shed. It was therapeutic to pry the old, rusted nails out and tear the rotted boards away, and by the time they decided to take a break, Flora was sweaty, but happy.
She poured them some lemonade and they sat out on the porch, chatting about anything and everything other than the attack. Flora was glad Grady didnât bring it up. That was one of the differences between him and Violet. They were both great friends in different ways. Violet would push her to talk things through and figure out her feelings, while Grady always seemed to know when she just wanted to be distracted.
âDid Violet invite you to her house on Thursday?â Grady asked her just as she was beginning to brace herself for getting back to work.
âYeah. It was a group text, which you would know, if you had a cell phone,â she said, grinning at him.
