It had been a week since I heard from Carter. I waited for him to call, but I got nothing. I looked for him all round town, but I never saw him. I just wanted to talk to him. I wanted to make sure he was okay after his run in with Hunter. Someone told me that he had changed his shifts so that he worked overnights now, and I seethed. I knew he did that so it was easier to avoid me. I had been fuming over that bit of information for three days.

On Friday I woke up earlier than I normally would have on a day off. Pops was still sleeping as I fumbled through the house, looking for something to do with my anxious hands and to keep my mind from thinking about Carter. I decided to make a grilled cheese despite it being six in the morning. When I burned it because all I could think about was Carter and the way he ran out of Fred's I decided I had to confront him. I needed to know if he was okay. I needed to know if he still wanted me.

I walked to the police station without changing. I wasn't feeling very dignified in my decision to chase Carter down and make him tell me what was going through his head, so I didn't really care that I was still wearing my plaid pajama pants and my holey sweatshirt.

Donna looked up when I entered the station, and even though she didn't look all the surprised to see me, she did quirk an eyebrow.

“You gotta check in, hon,” was all she said.

I gave her a look that suggested that wasn't really part of my plan. She sighed at me and scribbled my name in the vistor's notebook on the desk.

“He's at his desk.”

I briefly wondered how Donna knew I was looking for Carter, but didn't dwell on it for too long. There were some things I loved about living in a small town, but I hated that everyone knew your business.

I found my way back to where the officers' desks were. Six of the desks were empty, and the door to the chief's office was closed. At the furthest desk from where I was standing sat Carter. He was wearing headphones and staring blankly at his computer screen. He looked miserable, and I wanted so badly to go over there and smooth out the furrow in his brow and kiss him. Carter looked like he hadn't slept in days, and my frown deepened.

He looked up as I took a few steps closer. He slid the headphones from his head and looked around like he couldn't believe I was there. He sat stalk still as I approached him, and his eyes went wide in the way I loved that made him look younger than his twenty-nine years. When I was within inches of his desk I crossed my arms over my chest and looked down at him.
