CLOSING YOUR EYES TO PRAY

"Please bow your head and close your eyes," the evangelist will sometimes say to his congregation. This is probably to keep people from looking around just before the altar call is given.

Some of us were taught to close our eyes when we pray. There is nothing wrong with this. But I can find no biblical basis for closing your eyes when you pray. Jesus didn't close His eyes when He prayed, as far as we can tell. On at least two occasions, Jesus prayed with His eyes wide open. "Jesus looked up and said, `Father, I thank you that you have heard me"' (John 11:41). The Greek says that He lifted up His eyes, as in John 17:1: "He looked toward heaven and prayed."

The only reason I can think of for closing your eyes is to avoid distraction. That is a good reason to close your eyes. I also think it shows respect when you close your eyes when public prayer is being offered.
