By the time I could breathe again, the shock of the freezing water had begun to wear off. The dripping from the bed had slowed and eventually stopped, the water I’d disturbed falling still once more. Leaning into the door frame for support I pulled myself off the floor. I was soaked, shaking from the cold. I grabbed a towel from the bathroom and threw it onto the pool of water that had spread under my old bed. Then I closed the door on that room and headed back downstairs.

The fire was fading in the lounge. I threw the last of the shattered table on it in the hope it’d produce enough heat to stop my shaking. Kelly had thrown her coat/makeshift blanket off in her sleep. I tucked it around her once more. I wanted to wake her. To tell her what had happened, but what had happened? It’d rained solidly for at least a day and the old farmhouse’s roof had sprung a leak? Was that really a surprise? And was it worth forcing Kelly to face her hangover any earlier than she really needed to?

I pulled my chair close to the fire and wrapped myself in my coat. I felt the warm fabric slowly drawing the cold from my body, my clothes drying, my shirt no longer sticking to me. I watched the pieces of table glow and smoke in the hearth, the smell of the wood burning took me back to Kelly’s house. I felt my body relaxing, my eyes closing, booze rocking me gently to sleep.
