Chapter 8

We were mining down into the depths of the cave system, in search of the harmonite I had detected. Ten minutes had passed, and we were now far below the surface. We were careful to mine in a stair step manner, not wanting to make the mistake of opening a hole into a lava pit or an abyss.

“Do you still feel it, Jimmy?” Xander asked, rubbing his hands together.

I nodded. “Stronger than ever. We are getting close.”

I led the way forward, mining with my netherite pickaxe while holding a torch in my left hand. As I mined out and then down, out and then down, over and over again, creating a set of stairs, Emma and Claire followed behind, widening the passageway as necessary and also collecting some of the floating blocks that in my haste I had ignored.

Xander brought up the rear, he held a torch in each hand, continually checking behind us to make sure we were not being followed.

“Anyone back there?” I shouted between strikes with my pickaxe.

“No. Haven’t seen anyone or anything.”

I nodded and returned to mining downward. After a couple more strokes, I broke through a wall surrounding a large and very dark chamber. As I stepped into the chamber I heard a sculk sound: glu-glu-glu-k.

I put my hand up and everyone stopped walking. I raised my foot off the ground and stomped it. I heard two more of the distinctive sculk sensor sounds. Glu-glu-glu-k. Glu-glu-glu-k.

I turned around. “I think we’re in the deep dark,” I whispered. I looked at Emma and Claire. “This is the home of the Warden, remember?”

Emma and Claire both shivered. They remembered. They remembered its power and its peculiarity.

“Why are you whispering?” Xander said.

“We’ve entered the realm of the Warden,” I explained. “It hunts by sound not sight. Extremely sensitive. You heard the sculking noises, right?”

Xander nodded, his lip quivered a bit. He looked nervous. “Was that the Warden?”

I shook my head. “If it had been, he would’ve been on us already. But, he does make noises like that. Most of the time you hear it though, it’s just the strange sculk sensor blocks.”

Xander nodded. “Can I eat skulk sensors?” He was rubbing his hands together in anticipation.

“No, you can’t,” Emma said.

“What about the Warden? Is he edible?”

“You’d have to kill him first,” Emma said. “Besides, I don’t think he drops meat.”

Xander shook his head. “Y’all, I’m gonna have to stop coming to this dimension. All these meatless creatures … ugh, it’s maddening.”

I heard a sculk. I put my finger to my lips, indicating the need for silence. We waited, unmoving, wondering if we would soon hear another one. If we did, it would be the Warden, using his sensors to focus on us so that he could attack.

When the sculking did not repeat itself, I whispered, “I think we’re safe, which is a good thing. I think the harmonite is very close. The sensation is extremely strong with my vibe sensor. Follow me and be ready for anything.”
