“Ciaran sends his greetings,” said one of them.

He looked like he wanted to banter and insult us to show off for his boys, but I wasn’t interested in any chitchat. I pulled my netherite sword, teleported to the wither skeleton, and slashed mercilessly. Within seconds he flashed red and disappeared. The other nine wither skeletons, after recovering from the shock of my assault, lurched toward me, ready to strike me down. But I teleported away from them.

They crashed together in a heap, their bones going clickety-clack against each other. It took them a moment to untangle their bones. They glared at me, seething.

“Charge!” one of them said. All nine charged at us, shoulder to shoulder. I wasn’t sure what they were thinking. Nine of them against all of us?

“Let me handle it!” Spike said as he led ten of his redstone automatons forward. I thought this would be a good test, so I yelled to Makai and his crew, “Let them pass! Let’s see how well they do in battle.”

Makai’s pirate crew, twenty strong, parted to let Spike and his redstone automatons through. The automatons walked at exactly the same pace as Spike. Spike drew a netherite sword. The automatons raised their diamond swords. Spike began to run, meeting the charge of the wither skeletons. The automatons began to run. He raised his sword and the soldiers copied. The wither skeletons slowed their charge for a moment, assessing the situation, wondering what exactly it was they were seeing. Then, they rushed toward the redstone soldiers.

Just as the wither skeletons arrived within the reach of the redstone soldiers, Spike slashed his own sword down through the air. The soldiers copied his motion and most managed to strike wither skeleton bone. The wither skeletons struck back, slashing at the redstone automatons. Spike moved his sword up and down rapidly and soon several wither skeletons flashed red and disappeared.

Despite an initial advantage, it didn’t take long for the wither skeletons to gain the upperhand on the brainless soldiers. One broke into pieces, shards and chunks of redstone falling to the ground, along with the TNT strapped to its back.

The wither skeleton who had destroyed the redstone soldier shrieked when he saw the explosives. He shrieked again when the mechanism built into the redstone soldier’s body ignited the TNT. Then, it exploded.

Ka-BLAAAAAAAAM.

The explosion killed the remaining wither skeletons, who had bunched up during the battle, but it also destroyed four of the redstone soldiers. In the end, the small detachment of wither skeletons was defeated, but only three of the redstone automatons from the original ten remained.

“That was awesome!” Biff said, raising his shiny red arm to high-five Spike.

“It was pretty cool, I guess,” Claire said. “But if ten wither skeletons can take out seven redstone soldiers, they aren’t going to last very long against samogorths.”

“Come on, we’re nearly there.” Emma said.
