Future of Microservices

Over the years, software application development has evolved from Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) to monolith architecture and now microservices architecture, which is the most preferred software application technique. Global organizations such as Amazon, eBay, Twitter, PayPal, The Guardian, and many others have not only migrated but also embraced microservices over SOA and Monolith architectures in developing their websites and applications. Will Microservices be the future of software application development? Time will tell.

Microservices compared to SOA

Microservices vs. SOA has generated lots of debate amongst software application developers, with some arguing that microservices is simply a refined improved version of SOA, while others consider microservices as a whole new concept in software application development which does not relate in any way with SOA. Nonetheless, microservices have a lot of similarities to SOA. The main difference between SOA and microservices may be thought to lie in the size and scope as suggested by the term “micro, “meaning small. Therefore, microservices are significantly smaller compared to SOA, and are deployed as an independent single unit. Furthermore, an SOA entails either numerous microservices or a single monolith. This debate can be concluded by referring to SOA as a relative of microservices. Nevertheless, they all perform the same role of software programme development, albeit in different ways.
