We stayed in the kitchen and talked for a little longer and I finally learned everything that Liam had been keeping to himself. When I first entered this house, I had felt like there was this huge chasm between me and the person who had become my brother in every sense of the word, but now, after learning about him and finding out more about his relationship with Greg, I knew that this would be a turning point for us. I knew that after this, we would be closer.

“So, you had no clue,” I said as we moved to the lounge. “No clue at all that you were…” I paused and waved my hands back and fore. “That way inclined.” We both laughed at my wording.

“No.” Another chuckle left his mouth as we sat down on the sofa with a space between us. “I met Greg and it was just…” He shrugged his shoulders noncommittally. “It just felt right. Like we were meant to be.”

“I get it, man.”

“You do?” he asked in a surprised tone.

“Of course.” I reached over and squeezed his shoulder. “That’s exactly the way I felt when I met Blaire.”

“But you guys were a normal couple.” He picked at a loose strand on his jeans from where the knees had worn. “It’s not so easy when you’re different.”

“Liam.” I reached across the space and placed my hand over his. At the same time Greg came back downstairs. “No one will take this news badly. Everyone at the firehouse loves and accepts you like you’re one of their own. We’re a family. You know that.”

I didn’t want it to sound like I was telling him off but he had to know that I wouldn’t ever let anyone speak down to him—or about who he chose to spend his bed or his life with. All that I cared about was that he was happy and it was obvious that Greg made him happy.

“It’s everyone else that’s the problem,” he muttered. He looked so defeated and I knew that this was the thing that was holding him back from living his life.

I looked up at Greg, wondering how to handle this before an idea struck.

“Liam, sooner or later you’re going to have to rip the band-aid off.” I smiled at Greg as he took the seat next to Liam. I watched as he wrapped his arm around his shoulder and kissed his cheek. “How about the three of us head to the bar?” I tried my best to ignore the look of immediate worry on Liam’s face and instead, I focused on Greg. “Blaire can meet us there.”

Greg moved his gaze down to Liam. “What do you think?” He rubbed his palm up and down his arm, offering him comfort while he wrestled with this decision.

“I won’t leave your side,” I promised him. “We’ll do this. Together. As a team.”

I waited with bated breath while we waited for him to decide. After a long pause he slowly nodded his head.
