"My father was a lover of animals." Bronwen sipped from his own goblet, let the wine move about his mouth, tasting the lace of blood it contained before he swallowed. It was true enough. His father had loved animals, though these particular goblets never belonged to his birth father.

"And the letters, B for Bronwen and R for Reinn?"

"Yes." And that was the complete truth. Randolph, the sire of the castle had the goblets made for his sons, at least that was how he came to think of Bronwen and Reinn over the decades. Since his death, the carving and letters now stood as an insignia of the new masters of the castle.

"But you are not brothers." Calliope angled her head, her eyes studying him.

"No, we are not brothers. We are," he hesitated, drank another sip to buy some time, "friends." That too was the truth, if not the whole of it. He and Reinn were friends and had been nearly since they first met.

These days, however, they were so much more. How to tell her they were lovers, too? How would she react to know it was the three of them meant as one rather than three sets individually?

"Where is your family? Your father, what happened to him? I have seen no one else around but you and Reinn."

"They are not in this world." Likely dead by now, he thought as he stared at the fire. For humans do not live year, by century, by millennia like monsters. He saw shapes of them in the flames. His father so tall and virile, his mother so delicate and fragile, his sisters so young and beautiful. He had not thought of them in so many decades. Yet their pictures were as clear as yesterday in his mind.

Calliope gasped, shifted, and then touched his shoulder lightly with her free hand. "You were separated." Her words were barely a whisper. Without his heightened senses he might not have heard her.

"When the door between worlds was closed forever, you were separated from your family."

Bronwen slowly turned his head to look at her and caught the glimmer of tears in her breathtaking eyes. Affection, understanding, and grief for him. It was better than pity, he decided. Pity is what he would see there if he told her the whole truth. Pity and fear.

"We were separated," he confirmed with a stiff nod.

"And Reinn? Is that what happened to him as well?"

"Reinn's story is a bit different from mine, but he too was separated from his family. In that way, at least, we are alike."

"I have heard stories, families torn apart by the wars of that time, people caught in a place not their own when the doors between all worlds were sealed. I cannot imagine it myself." She shook her head, her voice so full of disbelieving sorrow. "To stay behind while my family goes away for a time, thinking so certainly they will return, only to have their way home closed off for eternity.
