Chapter Fifteen

The sheets beneath me were cool against my feverish skin. All the while I got ready for bed, all I could think about were pieces of my conversation with Taylor. How had she recognized the gnawing, distracting unease that had plagued me since…I had no idea how long.

I’d become so confused by the myriad of emotions and physical stirrings that I barely recognized them as my own. Brenda hadn’t even come close, but she hadn’t ever paid much attention to the things that mattered to me, and it had been a big reason we couldn’t make it work. I’m not sure I ever wanted it to. But Taylor paid attention to the things that mattered to me. The things that made a difference, or would, if I ever had an opportunity to be the kind of woman I’d only thought of becoming before Taylor.

After letting out a loud sigh that echoed against the ceiling, I flipped to my side and hugged one of the many pillows I had on the bed. They helped fill the empty space that I hoped would one day be occupied by a woman who knew and understood me, not just tolerated me. Someone who actually cared about the things that were important in my life. “A dynamic is much more than physical.” Taylor’s words came with a sense of conviction, as though she lived and breathed them, maybe she did. Was what she said true?

An hour later, sleep still hadn’t come and I threw back the covers in frustration. What the ever-loving fuck? I didn’t suffer from insomnia. More like I fell into bed so exhausted I passed out. Sitting on the edge of the bed, I tried to think of something constructive to do. I wrapped myself in my favorite worn robe and headed down the hallway to the study, then turned on my computer. My throat was parched, and my stomach grumbled enough to demand attention. The kitchen was sparse in choices. Grocery shopping was rarely a priority. I usually ordered take-out or snagged something from the kitchen at work. Guests in my home were rare. I opened the refrigerator and stood staring at the nearly empty shelves; the door held a variety of condiments, dressings, and assorted jars of long-forgotten sauces. The pantry offered little more. I snagged the box of microwave popcorn and found a lone package inside. The expiration date was one I could live with, so I ripped open the wrapper and unceremoniously tossed it inside, pushed a few buttons, and waited. The water from my personal cooler was ice cold and soothing. I rarely craved water and nearly emptied a second glass as I looked out the window, seeing nothing. My mind was still a canvas of random images from last night.

The ding that announced my early morning meal was ready broke the flashing stream of pictures. Once the steaming bag was open, I poured the contents into a bowl, grabbed a paper towel, and stalked back to the waiting computer.
