“I won’t be riding out today, Lillian,” I told my first-in-command.

“But…”

“You can ride with Kate. Take two others if you want. I am staying at home.”

“A preacher visited that village last week. I think it would be better if you made an appearance.”

“They know very well who’s keeping their children’s bellies full and their land safe. The preachers come and go. The mayor is a reasonable man and has you in high opinion. You don’t need me.”

“I’m not afraid to go by myself. But why are you staying at home?”

“Rees is unwell. I’m not leaving him today.”

Lillian was silent for a moment, then nodded. “I understand.”

She was about to step outside, but then she turned. “He will heal, won’t he?” she asked. The worry on her face made her look older.

“I don’t know.”
