Chapter Sixteen
August meant slightly shorter days, but not by much. Still, any extra moment with Shantay was a blessing to me. I took her out to dinner in the middle of the month and sat watching her enjoy her plate while I sipped my wine.
âDo you ever miss it?â she said.
I had no idea what she was talking about.
âMiss what?â
âAll the women?â
I straightened in my seat and looked her dead in the eye.
âNope. Youâre woman enough for me, baby girl. Besides, weâve been known to bring other women to bed with us.â
She shrugged.
âSure we have. But you were quite the womanizer.â
âAnd how did that make you feel?â I said.
âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean, assuming you had feelings for me back then, how did it make you feel to see me with a different woman almost every night?â
She carefully chewed her mouthful, took a sip of wine, and looked into the distance.
âI suppose I was jealous. But not necessarily of them.â
âHow do you mean?â
âI mean, I donât think I realized that I had feelings for you. I think I was just jealous that you were constantly getting some while I had settled into pretty much a celibate existence.â
I smiled at her. That had to have been so hard for her. I hadnât ever considered her needs. She was always just my faithful driver at my beck and call. I didnât think sheâd ever had a night off while in my employ.
âIâve not treated you very well, have I?â I said.
âYou treat me wonderfully.â
âSure, now that youâre my partner. But not while you were my driver.â
âIâm still your driver, arenât I? And is that what else I am? Iâve moved up from girlfriend?â
âYes, my dear. I consider you my partner. I want to spend as much time with you as I can. And maybe I shouldnât continue to employ you. Maybe I should give you enough to retire. Would you stay with me?â
âOf course. Iâm not going anywhere. And you can pay me or not. I canât remember the last time Iâve spent a dime of my own.â
âOkay. That settles it. Youâre fired.â
âThank you.â
âBut seriously, youâll need your own spending money. I donât want you to be totally reliant on me.â
âI have plenty of money. Youâve always paid me well, and Iâve never had time to spend any of it. So I have a nice nest egg.â
âGreat. That makes me happy.â
She finished her dinner and we walked through the neighborhood. The old houses were beautifully kept up, and I loved each one of them. Shantay stopped in front of one and took a picture. The house was old and dark with lots of plants in the front yard.
âWhatâs so special about this house?â I asked.
âIt was the inspiration for a bunch of books.â
âYeah? What were the books about?â
âVampires,â she said.
âVampires? Youâve read books about vampires?â
âI have. Though I didnât believe in them.â
âAh. So I wasnât your first?â I laughed.
âYouâre my first and my last.â
âGood answer.â
We strolled farther and finally ended up at home.
