The first two designs are done directly in the z-plane. In both cases, we create APFs that have no zeros in the transfer function. Without zeros, the frequency response can’t drop to zero at Nyquist (or anywhere else). Figure 11.22a shows the 1st order while Figure 11.22b shows the 2nd order all pole filter block diagrams in direct form. As with all the other filters, any of the biquad forms may be used.
