childhood, a journey with new maps
Father calls me William,
Mother calls me Will,
Sister calls me Willie,
But the fellers call me Bill.1
The confusion of sex roles that pervades our environment would be meeting more opposition if our young people had not previously been prepared for the change. The culture which reflects our social system, which is part and parcel of personality itself, demands that childhood reflect our new values.
The authors of the nursery rhyme (âNatural Historyâ) could once have easily answered questions like âWhat are little boys made of?â and âWhat are little girls made of?â Such positive responses cannot be given lightly today. A number of milestones on the once familiar road of child development have been knocked down, including traditional name preferences, dolls, childrenâs involvement in fairy tales, and established identities and roles of children. Each of these changes seriously affects how a child assimilates traditional ideals of masculinity and femininity. The nursery and playroom provide ample evidence.
