Chapter Ten

As we drove to Rathmore’s corporate offices, my stomach got tighter with each passing minute. We’d taken Dom’s advice and had found some nicer clothes at a trendy department store. For the first time in my life, I wasn’t worried about spending money, so we just bought what we liked, which ended up saving us a lot of time.

Back at the house, we showered before slipping on our new clothes.

I’d opted for a black pant set with a cropped, double-breasted blazer that looked amazing on me. In fact, with the pleated, high-waisted pants and tortoiseshell buckle on the belt, I looked more polished than ever, especially with the white, square-neck tank top underneath. The black pumps I got to go with it were expensive, but I’d hardly batted an eye at the price, grateful they were so comfortable.

After applying a fair amount of makeup, and styling my light blond hair in wispy waves, I had more confidence to meet a man whose reputation was so forbidding. I knew I wasn’t in the same league as him, but at least I had more confidence in these clothes.

Creed had gone more casual with a grey, tweedy sports jacket over a black, untucked t-shirt with dark, slim-cut jeans. He’d also needed new shoes, and had opted for a black leather half-boot style.

With his scruffy beard, tousled dark hair, and deep blue eyes, he looked so good he could have been a model… or a movie star. I shook my head. If we survived, he would soon be on a hot, new TV show, and I wasn’t sure I liked it much. All the women would be crushing on him, and I’d have to be okay with that.

Still, I’d be okay with anything, as long as we got out of this mess with Avery alive.

We pulled into the parking lot, and Creed gave my hand a reassuring squeeze. “We can do this.” His eyes shone with intensity, and he leaned in close for a kiss. “Whatever happens, we stick together.”

I nodded and kissed him back, loving the way his mouth felt on mine. I inhaled his clean, fresh scent and tried to memorize this moment. Leaning my forehead against his, I sighed. “Are you sure this is the right thing to do?” I hated to ask, but, after Dom’s warning, I couldn’t help the worry that knotted my stomach.

“Angel… I don’t know anything for sure. But I want to know Avery’s okay.”

I let out a breath. “I know… we need to see this through.”

We got out of the car and entered the impressive, glass-encased building, both of us walking tall and straight and presenting a united front. Inside, the walls were painted white, with lovely blue accents, ranging from turquoise to a light, sky-blue color.

The receptionist examined us, her gaze lingering longer on Creed than I liked. “Please have a seat. I’ll let Mr. Rathmore know you’re here.”

We sat on the white leather couch near the window, with an oblong, glass coffee table in front of us, and a deep-blue glass sculpture of a seashell sitting on top.
