CHAPTER FOURTEEN
I took the phone that Jared extended to me and put it against my ear.
"Hello?" I asked nervously. Why would Mason want to talk to me?
"Ava." He paused. "I need to talk to you." His voice was calm.
It was hard to hear his voice and not remember what had happened the last time we'd seen each other. I wanted to blame him for Kennedy's death. But deep down I knew he hadn't actually been the one to end her life even though his actions had led us to the clearing that day.
"So talk," I said. Maybe he would give us the answers we wanted, like why he'd changed Emma. He could also give us more information about the person who was after me.
"Not over the phone," he stated coldly. My eyes met Jared, who was anxiously sitting in front of me on the bed.
"You want to talk in person?" I asked. Jared shook his head furiously.
"Yes," Mason answered.
I really didn't have a choice. Jared didn't want me to meet Mason in person but it might be the only way to get the answers to the questions we had.
"Where?" I made the choice.
"Clearing." His answer was short and to the point.
"When?" I asked. Jared was not happy as he sat tight-lipped in front of me.
"Now." And the call ended.
"Are you insane?" Jared yelled as he stood up and pulled his jeans up.
"It's the only way we're going to find out why he changed Emma. He might even give us some information we can use on the man that's after me," I said, trying to reason with him.
He pulled a hand through his hair and turned his back on me.
"Do I need to remind you the last time you met up with him someone died?"
I physically flinched at his words. It felt like a slap in the face.
"No. It's not something I can forget," I told him honestly, feeling the familiar feelings swamp me at the memory of my friend's death.
"I'm sorry, I didn't meant to upset you," he said taking a step closer to me. I shrugged.
Irrespective of the dangers, we needed answers. Jared turned and took his phone from my hand. He flipped it open and dialed a number.
"I need you now. Ava and I are going to the clearing to meet Mason and I need you to meet us there. Keep yourself hidden," he instructed over the phone, "just in case."
I got out of bed and dressed as fast as I could. It was late afternoon so I still had a couple of hours before Anne got home from work. I turned to see Jared pull his shirt over his head.
"You're going to stay right by my side, do you understand?" he instructed with a voice that left no room for arguing.
"Yes," I replied.
"This could be a ploy to take you," he told me as his jaw clenched. I knew the risks I was taking by meeting up with Mason.
"You'll keep me safe." I knew Jared wouldn't let anything happen to me.
