EVEN AS SHARN KNELT over Suri’s body, deep beneath the ground Gavin cautiously slinked through the tunnels. Screams echoed from in front of him and from behind. There appeared to be no safe haven.

So much for mounting a defense. If they’d managed to confront the soldiers outside, taken them by surprise, they might have had a chance. He might have been able to get Sharn away in the confusion. But not now. The soldiers had taken them by surprise, coming into the tunnels. Already the soldiers had spread throughout the twisting, interconnected maze of tunnels, slaughtering mercilessly. Already the cries of death were growing fewer and further between. He’d come upon several bodies hacked to shreds, good friends, many of whom he’d known since birth, watched them grow to adulthood here in the temple.

He had no allies; there would be no resistance. This was the end of everything he’d built here.

He prayed to the gods that Sharn had somehow managed to escape. If not, the world would soon drown in darkness.

Voices, coming closer, boots crunching against the dusty floor. Gavin pressed his back against the wall and tried to blend into the shadows between two torches spaced far apart.

Around a bend to his left came three men. Sweaty, pumped with adrenalin, eagerly boasting of the day’s kills. Catching sight of Gavin, they stopped.

A slow grin spread across the face of the largest. His red hair was wild, his sword and forearms spattered with blood. “This filth is mine, okay, Thorn?” he said to one of the other men, short and with a pointed nose. The other two didn’t protest, so the man stepped forward, his eyes fastened on Gavin, his sword arm tensing.

Gavin heard other soldiers approaching from his right. He was trapped; there was nowhere left to run. No reason to delay the inevitable. One last time he prayed to the gods that Sharn had gotten away. Then he drew himself up with dignity, straightened his robes.

And stepped forward to meet the killing thrust.

The sword pierced his chest, and pierced too the pocket of compressed gas in his abdomen. The gas that was part of his gift. A very volatile gas. The gas rushed out and was ignited by the torches flickering on the walls. A massive explosion billowed outward and upward, a wave of flame and pressure tore through the earth, cleansing everything in its path.
