Four glasses of champagne and twelve bags of ludicrously expensive clothing later, I winced as Clarissa rang up my total and Cole handed over his credit card. I had everything I could need, down to underwear, gym clothes, and evening dresses, though I wasn’t sure what Cole had in mind for those. She hadn’t even said how much it had come to, but I got the feeling Cole didn’t care. He simply handed over his card without hesitation, and then gave Clarissa instructions as to where to drop off the rest of my bags.

Intent on keeping me out in the sunshine for a while, Cole insisted on taking me for dinner, and I picked out one of my favorite outfits he’d bought me to wear—a pair of slim-fitting black jeans, boots, and a sleeveless, pale gray silk blouse that Cole had said brought out the color of my eyes. A charcoal and pale gray tweed jacket completed the look, but since it was still warm out, I draped it over my arm, covering the faint scars of track marks from the drugs I had apparently taken. I ran my fingertips over them under the jacket, still confused about their presence. I couldn’t remember who I was, but something told me I couldn’t have done this to myself. Who was the woman who had? Was she a party girl, chasing a high? Or someone running from reality, wanting to dive into the escape these substances could give her?

Would I ever find out? I wasn’t sure. I made a decision to get Cole to set up the phone Carlisle had given me this afternoon, and then I was going to do some research on my condition. I was going to find some way to bring my memories back before these guys realized I had absolutely no idea who I was. Cole wouldn’t mind, but I could tell Alastor would never believe me. He was convinced I was the enemy.

I sighed, watching Cole chat and flirt with the assistants as they began to store my bags away in the back. He was no threat to me, but Alastor could easily take me down. I was strong, but not that strong. That man was like a bull, and there was something inside him, something I’d seen in his eyes—a dark fire that threatened to consume me. He was dangerous, and so was the way my body reacted when he touched me. I had been furious at him a coupe of days ago when he’d held me down, his grip digging into my flesh—I still had bruises on my arms—and yet the way his fingers had stroked my skin afterwards had been firm but gentle, coaxing me like he was trying to calm some wild animal. I felt like a wild animal around him, like I had no control, and I hated that. The feelings he had awoken in me were addictive and wrong, like the drugs I’d had in my system. I needed to shut it down now.
