Chapter 6
For a moment, I couldnât believe it had worked, then remembered we werenât out of it yet. The water moved fast, and a few rapids were ahead of us.
Somehow, I managed not to lose my grip on Lily. âHold onto me.â She did so despite the pain and how much she was shivering. Lily held onto me with all the strength she could put into the motion, and I held her back.
The water carried us down, and for a few moments, I looked behind us, almost fearing that some of our enemies had tried to pursue us, but it seemed we would get to escape. Well, if we managed to survive what would follow.
Our heads went under the water more than once as its speed increased, and I almost lost my grip on Lily. Maybe we should have tried to move closer to the margins, yet that risked bringing us to a stop too close to the demon. And the river flowed northwest, leading us closer to Beacon and away from Damabiath. We would need as much distance from him as we could find.
Being aware that demons were dangerous and seeing it for myself was another thing. I had hoped we could have a chance against one, though maybe I should have known better.
Lily talked to me more than once about how threatening they could be, even if she didnât give any details. I knew how dangerous Lily could be and understood her sister Layla was even stronger and more experienced than she was. I should have connected the dots when the older foxgirl said their clan had to work in tandem to deal with a demon.
âLily, Lily.â I called out when I saw her eyes fluttering close, and I knew we had to get out. The water was frigid, and she was gravely wounded. We needed to get out; I needed to get her somewhere warm. Then we could worry about the rest.
Finding an area where I felt comfortable enough to approach the western bank took a couple of minutes. I dragged the foxgirl out of the water, laid her out on the margin, and slapped her on the face a few times, trying to wake her up. She didnât, but a quick glance down showed me she was still breathing, and her wound didnât seem to be bleeding as much as it had initially. I couldnât be sure that was a good sign. Foxgirls healed far faster than humans, but not that fast, and I feared she had simply lost too much blood.
I didnât hesitate, ripped part of my t-shirt, and used it to make a tourniquet around her leg. That she shifted in something like pain despite being unconscious gave me some hope, and I tried to gently slap her awake once more and gave up when she gave me no other sign.
A quick glance around allowed me to recognize some landmarks. It wasnât too far from where the demon attacked us, though it would take them a long time to reach our position.
