Chapter Ten

I woke to the feeling of being bounced around. From the movement, it took me a second to make out that I was in the back of a rather nice Cadillac, Dalsheen’s rather nice Cadillac to be exact.

I rubbed my head, trying to dispel the throbbing pain that pounded in tune with my heartbeat.

“What did I miss?” I asked.

Caroline was upfront driving, while Rainah sat shotgun, staring out the side window, looking for something only she could see. Jeremiah sat next to me. He wore an expression of reserved apprehension as if a King Cobra sat next to him.

Caroline looked at me from the rear-view mirror, her eyes visible in the rectangular reflection. “Mamma Lupita stopped them. I have never seen anything so powerful, so wonderful,” she said, in awe.

I did a mental check of myself; nothing was broken and I still had my staff and pistol, my head throbbed, but it was slowly fading. All in all, not too bad for just fighting a ton of demons, I hoped everyone else had fared as well.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

Jeremiah spoke up from beside me. “After you pulled her back in, she regained control of her shield, we held off Mendenhall with our crossbows and she ordered us to take you and Rainah and get out, she said she would keep the demons from following and she did.”

“She did, huh?” I looked around, trying to get a bearing on where we were.

“Yes, she managed to keep the demons occupied while we escaped,” Caroline added. Rainah sat quietly. “Did she tell you where we are supposed to go, or what Zagan is doing?” I asked.

“No, she did not. Everything was very confusing. I never knew she had such power,” Caroline said. She kept her face forward, on the road ahead.

“Yeah, neither did I. Welcome to the club,” I muttered. I had tons of questions about Mamma Lupita and her power but now wasn’t the right time. Maybe later, the opportunity for answers would present itself, maybe.

I studied Rainah. Her hair hung over the side of her face and hid most of it from view, but what I did manage to glimpse was beautiful. Something about her features looked familiar, but I couldn’t make out what. She seemed disconnected from our conversation like she was in another world.

I reached out with my power and touched her aura. It was the same as before, like a beautiful flower growing in a bed of death. She turned from the window and looked at me, seeming to sense my subtle probe.

I pulled back, no longer touching her aura, and she turned to continue staring out the window, into the void of night.

“So, you must be pretty damn special, for Mamma Lupita to risk her life to get you to safety. Mind telling me what you know about what has been happening lately?” I asked her.

She didn’t answer, just kept looking out the window. Maybe she hadn’t heard me.

“Rainah, how are you involved in Zagan’s schemes?” I asked, raising my voice so everyone could hear me clearly.
