Chapter Seventeen

A hideous stench sifts up my nose and dies in my chest. It makes my eyes water and bile rise to my throat. I resist Chaos’s grip, but he easily overpowers me, being twice my size. Now, he wraps a hairy arm around my throat and holds me firmly still.

Opposite us, Power seethes from the sight. His huge, ripped chest is covered with those dark tattoos. They swim all around his tanned skin, getting faster and faster the more worked up he gets. He has the shape of a bear, with all the beauty of his natural state. His low growl makes the floor tremble and I yelp in fear. There is no doubt about it. Power is terrifying in his normal state. But like this? Even I feel weak in the knees.

“Let go of her!” He growls, his voice booming across the room. It’s several pitches lower than his normal voice, and it sends shivers up my spine.

A throaty laugh behind me makes me feel even worse. “Or what?”

A disgusting red mist oozes across the room. It’s blotchy like spilt ink, drifting over to Power. Chaos forces more of the disgusting stuff out and the stench in the room increases. But oddly, Power doesn’t bother dodging the mist. It’s as if he can’t see it. I watch in horror as it swims over to him and wraps around his head. As soon as he gets a taste of it, his eyes flash a darker colour, if that is even possible. His fangs flash onto display and his paw-like hand curls into fists.

“Try something, Beast.” Chaos urges him to attack, and his grip on me tightens.

Oh shoot! He’s playing with his mind!

“Power, calm down!” I cry out. “He’s poisoning you! He’s making you ang—”

Before I can finish, a sea of red submerges Power. He can’t possibly hear me through the rage which is most likely coursing through his veins. Heaving, his towering body looks as though it’s going to explode with fury. The fire in his hands look miniscule, and for a long moment, it looks as if he might actually drop it to save me.

I clench my eyes shut and try with all my might to seep into Chaos’ head, but it's impenetrable. A potent curse in the Realm dulls my senses. A cry of frustration leaves my lips as I can’t access his past.

“I mean it!” I cry out, “He’s winding you up! D—don’t do it!”

“Clever, Witch.” Chaos grumbles behind me. I hold my breath. His awful stench grows stronger until I’m suffocating on it. Then, more soldiers pile into the room. They slash at Power, and he is too distracted to anticipate their attack. A shriek leaves my lips as the blood tumbles out of his muscular stomach, followed by a sword being thrust into his arm. But with one swipe of his talons, the threat is quickly removed. Those malicious eyes never once leave Chaos’s arm around my body. It’s as if he is burning the sight into his memory, torturing himself repeatedly with it.
