1. Now that Kabir, too, has passed away, I can reveal Mullah Rabbaniâs name. He is the man who gave the Afghan Governmentâs consent to dispose of Osama bin Laden and who attended some of the clandestine meetings that supported the seizure/capture/killing of Osama bin Laden. Unfortunately, since Kabir was still shielding Rabbaniâs involvement in 2003/2004 when we worked on the book, I was not privy to which meetings Mullah Rabbani attended.
Chapter 6: The E.U. Slumbers
One of the most asked questions during my February 2000, trip to Afghanistan was, âHow could President Clinton remain in power after confessing to adultery?â The mullahs in power were shocked that he still held office. I told them that the President of the United States never really admitted to adultery, but they insisted that they heard he had on the radio. They also read in newspapers that he had confessed. I wondered how they had heard of this so quickly but had never heard anything about some of the terrible things that bin Laden was accused of initiating.
âAccording to Clinton, he did not commit adultery. He committed a sin,â I explained. âA woman had oral sex with him.â They had no idea what that meant. I explained how oral sex is performed to the group of Afghan holy men. After my explanation, half of them said they wanted to puke, the other half laughed. It was a shocking practice for this group of religious war veterans who felt that only animals licked each other. I said that it was pretty common in Western society.
Their next question, âHow come it isnât a sin?â
âIt probably is a sin, but Clinton didnât think it was adultery,â I said.
âThen what is it?â
âIn a way he was right. In no holy books â Old Testament, New Testament, Quran â is there any punishment for that kind of sex.â This made the mullahs laugh. They wanted to know how Clinton came up with the distinction.
I asked them how they would convict a person who had committed that type of sin. They had no answer and admitted that Clinton was clever and unique.
I agreed that he was good with his words and that he knew what to say and when to say it. I explained his background and that the man really was a genius when it came to public relations and speaking â except for the one small problem he had with his intern.
âPlus, heâs really good for America because he makes the economy strong. He comes from a very poor background. He lost his father at an early age and had to make it on his own.â The rich people donât want him running things because he tries to watch out for the poor people.
I used him as an example of what America really represents: opportunity to whoever can rise above their original status. They questioned Clintonâs judgment but came to admire him nonetheless. In retrospect, this was one of my funnier moments with the Taliban.
Sometime during the February trip, it was decided that I should return around May with a Memorandum of Understanding.
