Chapter Nine - Delilah

“You can’t do this to me. This is discrimination!" Cyrus protested, his voice teetering between disbelief and defiance. But it was the subtle undertone of desperation that caught my ear.

Sitting in my dimly lit office, I observed the changeling before me. He, in this current form, was the neon-haired vixen from the bar, with curves that promised adventures and eyes that hinted at secrets. But I had seen him in a myriad of forms over the years. Sometimes, he was a muscular man with tattoos sprawling across his skin; at other times, a petite woman with raven-black hair, or an androgynous beauty with striking green eyes. Cyrus was a master of transformation, wearing faces like others wore outfits, changing them to suit his whims or needs.

But what most didn't know was that his transformations were more than skin deep. Cyrus used them to manipulate, to enthrall, and to ensnare. He played with emotions, with desires. And though many in the supernatural world were guilty of manipulation in one form or another, there was something about Cyrus’s method that felt particularly invasive, predatory even.

Leaning back in my leather chair, I fixed my gaze on him. "It's not about discrimination, Cyrus. It's about respect and boundaries. You switch your forms to play games with people’s desires. It's a dangerous game you play, and I won’t have it in my club."

His once flirtatious eyes now smoldered with indignation. "It's just a bit of fun, Delilah. No harm done. They enjoy it as much as I do."

That was his defense every time. But I’d heard stories, whispers really, about the hearts he’d broken, the minds he’d played with. People left in his wake, questioning their own senses, their own desires.

As our standoff continued, the door behind me creaked open. The tall, imposing figure of Kyne filled the doorway, his presence a silent reinforcement of my decision. Kyne and I shared a history that stretched back decades, a bond forged in trust and shared secrets. He was the bouncer of La Société de la Nuit, but to me, he was also an advisor, a confidant, and a friend.

"Cyrus," Kyne’s deep voice rumbled, "I think it's time for you to leave."

The changeling glanced between the two of us, the reality of the situation slowly dawning on him. He seemed to deflate a bit, the confident facade fading.

"This isn't over, Delilah," he hissed, the threat evident in his tone.

Without another word, Kyne ushered him out, choosing the back door to avoid further attention. As the door clicked shut behind them, I sighed heavily, hoping against hope that this would be the last time I'd have to deal with the changeling's games. But deep down, I knew with creatures like Cyrus, it was only a matter of time.

When Kyne returned, I leaned back in my chair, closing my eyes.

“Can you please go tell Annabelle I need to speak to her?”

Kyne nodded and left, and a minute later, I heard a soft knock at the door.

"Come in, Annabelle," I beckoned, gesturing toward the plush leather chair that sat opposite my desk.
