On the journey back to our side of the hill, I asked the Lady Poppaea if the Lady Octavia was her friend.

She said, “Childhood is a magic time.”

I said, “You won’t need me any more. Whatever it is you were planning to get the Emperor, it worked.”

“That’s true, Sporus,” she said. “While we were whiling away the morning at the Oppian Hill, Otho will already have packed. He is being made governor of Lusitania.”

“Where’s that?”

“Somewhere, you know, with wild tribes, warriors rubbing themselves with bear fat. The Celts are quite into buggery; Diodorus wrote that their warriors lie on the skins of animals, with ‘a catamite on either side.’ He’ll be in heaven, the poor dear.”

“So will his wife,” I said softly.

“I shall be a goddess. There it is. It’s a pity about Octavia, but goddesses need sacrifices.”

It would be some time before I laid eyes on the Lady Claudia Octavia once more. And it would be in the form of a decapitated head, delivered to the Empress Poppaea in a golden casket.
