For the two studies selected to illustrate the critical-case design, all the answers to the five critical questions are positive. In this fact we can recognize the first function of the critical questions, to authorize the use of the double hierarchy for the research question at hand. The second function, already shown for the argument-from-analogy scheme (see Section 3.3), is to contribute to the specification of the propositional commitment of the proponent, including the answers to critical questions among the premises of the reasoning. In doing so, the full expression (with the critical question embedded in) of the argument of the double hierarchy delimits the conditional plausibility (see Section 3.2) of the reasoning.33

In the Sharp study, this means that the conclusion about the ubiquity of social control in psychiatric institutions is subordinated:

to the plausibility of the hierarchy proposed;

to the suitability of the position of the case selected in the hierarchy of democratic psychiatric institutions, a position that qualifies the community studied as a proper critical case;

to the plausibility of the assumption of a linear relationship between commitment toward the empowerment of people cared-for and actual practices in that direction;

to the plausibility of the exclusion of deviant cases, in which, despite the explicit authoritarian intentions of the staff, the relationship between staff and cared-for people is shaped by a power equilibrium.
