CHAPTER 4

Intoxicating Touch

I couldn’t stop thinking about Emily. Something had changed since that night when we went to get burgers. Before I dropped her off that night, I managed to convince her to give me her phone number, and we have been texting ever since. Over the past week, I found myself smiling more often than ever. I had never had such explosive chemistry with someone without even sleeping with them, and I found myself craving her company more with each passing day.

She had sent me a text ten minutes ago, telling me she was on her way to my office. Since the time I sent Emily’s manuscript to Suzanne, she had only recently called me back to schedule a meeting with Emily, and I suggested that they do it in my office. I suggested it as an excuse to see Emily again since she had turned down all my other offers, but I also wanted to know if Suzanne was going to publish her book.

“Hey.”

Emily was standing at the door of my office. I had gone out with multiple women in my time, and they were always dressed lavishly in designer clothes with short hems and low cuts. Yet, every time I saw Emily, I was frozen with amazement. She was wearing a simple white top and blue jeans this time, and she looked more captivating than any woman I had ever seen.

What is she doing to me?

“Emily,” I addressed her, snapping out of my daze and getting to my feet.

“I hope I’m not late,” she said nervously.

“Not at all,” I replied. “Suzanne hasn’t arrived yet. Here, have a seat.”

She walked into my office slowly, looking around as she came in. “Nice view,” she said, taking a seat opposite me.

“Yes, it is,” I replied, not taking my eyes off her.

She rolled her eyes at me but didn’t hide the small smile on her face.

“I want you to be my date to a company function tonight,” I said without thinking.

“Company function?” she asked.

“Yes, it’s my mom’s birthday. I hold a charity function every year on her birthday to celebrate,” I explained.

“That’s... surprisingly philanthropic of you,” she teased.

“What can I say,” I shrugged. “I’m just such a giver.” I winked as I said it, and she giggled.

“Well, I hope I’m not interrupting anything,” a voice said from the door.

Suzanne Baston was a fierce-looking woman in her fifties. She always left her shock of red hair down to flow over her shoulders, matching her signature red lipstick. Baston Publishing was the biggest publishing house in the company, and Suzanne had been a family friend for many years.

“Never,” I said, rising to my feet again to hug her and kiss her cheeks. “It’s great to see you again, Su.”

“Well, I’m not as excited to see you as I am to see her,” she pointed at Emily, whose eyes widened. “Emily Richards, I presume.”

“Y—yes Mrs. Baston,” Emily stammered.

“Please, call me Suzanne,” she said. “I’ll make this quick. Your manuscript kept me on my toes for the past week.
