Chapter 10

THREE ISLANDS in three days took their toll. At least Carole seemed to be minding her business. The few times Tio had seen her, she had been spending time with another guy, which was fine with him.

Curaçao had been great. He and Dillon spent the day at the beach, and Tio had rented a cabana so the two of them could have a measure of privacy and Dillon would have some shade from the tropical sun. That would have been relaxing, except apparently Dillon’s manager had gotten in touch with him and insisted that he bring his phone. They had ended up talking more than once, and each time, Dillon grew more tense and anxious. He’d kept the contents of the calls to himself.

Once they were ready to leave, Dillon tapped Tio on the arm. “Isn’t that Carole?”

Tio instantly tensed. He looked where Dillon indicated, grateful she didn’t make a move to come over, though she did meet Tio’s gaze for a second, chilling him deeply.

“Do you recognize the guy she’s with?”

“No. Should I?”

Dillon took out his phone and watched the screen for a few seconds before showing it to him. “He has some shows at the end of the cruise.”

Tio shrugged. “Maybe she thinks he has money or something.”

“Saucer of milk?” Dillon asked. “Maybe some Fancy Feast?”

“Funny,” Tio deadpanned.

Dillon placed his hand on Tio’s arm, a tingle going right through him. “If she’s found someone else, maybe she’ll leave us alone.” He began gathering their things. “While she’s occupied, let’s head back to the ship.”

Now that was a good idea. Tio slipped on his shoes and got his bag. As they left the beach, he glanced at Carole, who seemed to be soaking up the other man’s attention. Seeing that was enough to release the belly knot he’d had for days.

Fortunately, the calls from Dillon’s manager stopped during their day on Bonaire. Well, Tio had ensured that by leaving Dillon’s phone in the cabin. They were going reef snorkeling, and there was no need for electronics out on the water. Finally Dillon seemed relaxed once more, and they spent the entire morning in the water with sponges, coral, and fish of every color. A few sea turtles and small sharks even made appearances.

Dillon tapped his arm as their time in the water was coming to an end, drawing his attention to a small octopus as it zipped along the sand away from them. They had even seen a seahorse. So it had been a relaxing if also tiring day. Once they were back on board, Tio practically collapsed in his seat, breathing hard. “Who would have thought that floating could take so much energy?”

“Yeah. But did you like it?” Dillon asked with a bright smile.

Tio smiled back and nodded, pulling on a shirt and getting one for Dillon from the pack they’d brought along. There was limited shade on the sailboat, so Tio had to make sure Dillon didn’t roast. “I did.” He got the bottle of sunscreen and began coating the back of Dillon’s neck.
