Use What You Already Have

If you can repurpose the items from a yard sale or store, you can do the same with items already in your home. An older couple inherited several items of furniture from a deceased aunt. One was a traditional kitchen buffet for which the couple didn't have a specific use. They did, however, want a nice piece of furniture to hold audio equipment in their dining room. They placed the buffet against a wall. Above, they hung a small flat screen television on the wall. The buffet included a wide top drawer, so they removed the front of the drawer, created a static bottom, and used hinges to turn the drawer front into a fall-down cabinet door. This created the perfect place for audio and video equipment, and the cabinets beneath that space offered storage for seasonal dishes.

When you are going through your items and creating declutter piles, question the organizational value of everything. This includes furniture, baskets, bins, jars, cups, racks, hooks, and more.
