(3)Biology Microchips

Biological microchips integrate biological systems with microchips. For example, it isolates and harnesses a biological process in which energy is produced through ion pumps powered by ATP, the biological world’s energy currency molecule, to power integrated circuit. By doing so, ion pumps actually act similarly to transistors. An artificially created biological component with IC will greatly extend the range of possibilities in electronics. As Columbia engineering professor Ken Shepard said, “100 Intel designers couldn’t design a system that could tell if there is a skunk in the room or not, and the best synthetic biologists in the world couldn’t build a radio. If we can just use the piece of the biological process that we want and use its function with solid state electronics, we will get that enhanced functional palette of capacities that don’t exist with either of them alone.”
