CHAPTER EIGHT

Justyn sat at the window, his head in his hands, deep in thought.

The crack of a hunting gun high in the mountains pierced the morning air. Today was the day the two families were gathering to try to figure out, one last time, where Alison Galvin and Don Davenport might actually be. Everyone’s morale was faltering and there was lots of talk about packing it in and going home. He couldn’t make sense of events: Grant’s fatal accident, Danny’s dad’s reincarnation, the attack on Davenport at Valldemossa. Why had Argentinian heavies tried to frighten him and Clare? To make matters worse he was becoming convinced that Grant’s death wasn’t an accident. Glancing up surreptitiously, watching Clare looking for something to wear, he was struggling to understand why she had behaved so oddly two afternoons ago. Where was she going when he saw her shoot out of the hotel car park?

“Put that frown away, JS, the wind may change!”

Before he could reply, a loud knocking on the door distracted them. Justyn jumped to his feet, pulled open the door and heaved a sigh of relief at the sight of Danny.

“Today’s the day!” Danny breezed in. The other two looked doubtfully at him.

“Well whatever we decide, I’m staying on anyway. Oliver’s arriving soon and I’ve got a hunch.”

“Yes?”

“Quite simply, sooner or later we’ll discover my mother and Davenport.”

“Unlikely.” Justyn’s pessimistic mood persisted. “They’ve probably caught a fast boat to Ibiza by now.”

“Maybe. But they’d have to come back. They’ve lived here for twenty years. They’re too old now to up sticks again.”

Justyn, wasn’t convinced. Clare smiled warmly at Danny. She admired his resilience. Her phone buzzed.

“At … yeah, Okay, we’ll do that, by twelve noon then, no worries.” She turned to the others, “Mum’s had a bit of a turn, wants us to meet up at Pollença at midday.”

Danny nodded, picked up his phone, and rang Guy. No answer. He left him a voicemail, telling him of the change of venue. Justyn groaned in frustration, shifting in his chair. He desperately wanted time alone with Clare before the ‘Aunty Summit’.

Having left the message, Danny remembered that he had seen Guy earlier.

“Oh by the way, you’ll never guess who I spotted yesterday with a very pretty woman?”

“Who?” Justyn at that moment really couldn’t care less.

“Guy!”

“What?” Clare was incredulous. “What did she look like?”

“Oh quite tall, thin, short dark hair. Really striking.”

“Oh my God! That sounds like Leia. I had a coffee with her and she was telling me about this man she’d met whose name was Guy, but I didn’t for one minute think it could be our Guy. She said he was sweet and gentle. She didn’t actually mention what he looked like, otherwise I would have known straight away. Do you think I should say something?”

“Just stay out of it.”

“But Leia said they were planning to get a boat to Ibiza.”

“But he’s supposed to be coming here. Perhaps it’s not him after all.”

“I think they were only going for twenty-four hours.
