My arrival in Cong coincided with the village's market day. Vendor stalls offering fresh baked goods, vegetables, meats, and dairy products lined the main street. I headed down Abbey Street toward Evelyn's house and pulled into the church parking lot. I sat in my car for a few minutes and then walked across the street to St. Mary of the Rosary Church. I stood outside the church doors and observed Evelyn's house for signs of movement and life. Baskets, filled with Fuchsia, sat on both sides of the front door. From my vantage point, the plants looked healthy and watered. Three women emerged from the church. They glanced at me but didn't say anything. I thought about the last time I'd stood outside Evelyn's house with the same purpose. On that day, I'd gone for a walk in the Cong woods and happened upon a murder scene.
Once again, I strode across the street to Number One Abbey Street. I knocked and waited. A few cars sped by over the small bridge that crossed the River Cong on their way up the drive to Ashford Castle. I knocked againânothing. I felt one hand ball into a fist. The other grabbed for the cell phone in my holster. A few more cars passed by, but Evelyn Cosgrove was a no-show.
I pulled my phone from its holster and called The Consulting Detective. I knew they weren't in the office yet, but I left a voice mail, instructing Ellie to send me the address of the dig in London where Evelyn Cosgrove worked when her husband disappeared. She wasn't going to get away with this again. If I had to follow her to the ends of the earth, Evelyn Cosgrove and I were going to have a heart-to-heart.
I turned on my heel and looked over at the church door. No, I said to myself. Prayers weren't going to help in this instance, just good-old persistence and hard work. I left my car parked where it was and continued to Main Street.
I headed directly to the former Jane Doherty Fitness Vitality studio, which had been renamed Sarah's Yoga Place. Sarah, Jane, and Jimmy had been business partners at one time. Jimmy had been a silent partner. He'd sold his stake to Sarah after Jane was murdered. According to Georgina, heâd wanted to make amends for not telling her about the partnership with Jane when he and Georgina were dating. But Georgina hadn't budged. In hindsight, I wondered what else Jimmy had concealed. Of course, he must have had secrets; otherwise, why was he dead? Some secrets, I had learned, lived parallel and undiscovered lives of their own.
On the way to the yoga studio, I passed the Quiet Man Café, and I couldn't help but think of Paul Doherty and our lunch there. Across the street from the café, Ben's Rarities sported a fresh coat of paint and a new name. I looked away and increased my stride. I wouldn't dwell on a past that I couldn't change.
