6 A Special Visitor

First thing on Thursday morning, Ms Ogle made a special announcement. “We’re having an assembly at ten o’clock and there will be special guests. So, before then I want each of you to consider your appearance. If anything needs to be sorted out, then we can take care of it now. I have needle, cotton and spare buttons. And for those who never use a comb, I have one of those as well.”

“Who are the special guests?” asked Damien.

“You’ll find out soon enough. Okay, when you’ve got your appearance sorted, start on the maths I’ve put on the screen.

Even after they were all spruced up, very little maths was done, with the students preferring to talk about who their special visitors might be. As the school had previously received royal princes and governors-general, there was no limit to the suggestions put forward. The older girls favoured a boy band that had performed in Dunedin the previous night. The boys, however, were hoping for some of the All Blacks who had recently won the Rugby World Cup for the umpteenth time.

As it turned out, all were wrong, but nobody was disappointed. Well, not at the beginning, that is.
