CHAPTER 22

Garrity shook his head slowly. “I don’t think this is a good idea.”

Dak waved him away. “It’s a great idea. Division of labor. You watch Moreno, I talk to sex workers. We need to figure out the best place and time to approach Mrs. Moreno. Just because Moreno is at work doesn’t mean he doesn’t have some way of keeping an eye on her. There could be CCTV all over the house and a tracker on her phone. Men like him want total control of their women, and we have no idea what measures he has in place to achieve that.” She thought again of the way Mrs. Moreno had flinched and cowed in her husband’s presence. Putting him away would be a double win, ending the possibility of more young girls being murdered and his spousal abuse. “We don’t want to be responsible for putting her in more danger.”

“I get that. I do. But Charnwood wants this case closed. If he finds out you’re working another case, he’ll have your ass.”

“Closing this case might not solve Kimbal’s murder like he’s hoping it will.” Dak shrugged on her jacket and picked up her keys. “And it doesn’t take two of us to watch the house and shepherd your junior agents.”

“That’s another thing. I get to roast in the car while they get fresh air at the park or knocking on Moreno’s door.”

Dak smiled. “I’d have sympathy if you were in my truck, but you’ve got AC.”

“I can’t believe you still haven’t fixed that damn thing. You must lose ten pounds of water on your daily commute.”

Dak didn’t bother responding. She’d talked more about her AC in the last week than she had in a decade. “Look. I’m going to talk to street workers who get more than their fill of men every day, and I’m going with Weaver. They’ll be squirrelly enough with the two of us. Three is overkill.” She tried to keep her tone even. Having to justify her movements to anyone didn’t sit well. She liked Garrity, but his desire to follow protocol and not rock the boat with Charnwood was prohibitive. Coloring outside the lines was part of the job for her, and more and more, it was becoming clear that Garrity didn’t share that proclivity. Hamilton’s time at the Academy couldn’t pass by fast enough. He’d shown that he was more than happy to follow her lead.

“What am I supposed to tell Charnwood if he asks for an update?”

She grabbed her bag and headed to her office door. “The truth. We’re laying the groundwork to flip the wife. It’s a delicate situation, which will take finesse and time.” She shrugged. “Besides, the tire tracks came back from near where Beasley’s car was dumped. They were a match for the ones at the empty house opposite the Keyes’ home—”

“Tires which could be from several thousand trucks. It’s thin, Farrell.”

Dak sighed and clenched her jaw, aware that every minute she spent explaining her actions became ten minutes in hellish traffic.
