CHAPTER 22
Garrity shook his head slowly. âI donât think this is a good idea.â
Dak waved him away. âItâs a great idea. Division of labor. You watch Moreno, I talk to sex workers. We need to figure out the best place and time to approach Mrs. Moreno. Just because Moreno is at work doesnât mean he doesnât have some way of keeping an eye on her. There could be CCTV all over the house and a tracker on her phone. Men like him want total control of their women, and we have no idea what measures he has in place to achieve that.â She thought again of the way Mrs. Moreno had flinched and cowed in her husbandâs presence. Putting him away would be a double win, ending the possibility of more young girls being murdered and his spousal abuse. âWe donât want to be responsible for putting her in more danger.â
âI get that. I do. But Charnwood wants this case closed. If he finds out youâre working another case, heâll have your ass.â
âClosing this case might not solve Kimbalâs murder like heâs hoping it will.â Dak shrugged on her jacket and picked up her keys. âAnd it doesnât take two of us to watch the house and shepherd your junior agents.â
âThatâs another thing. I get to roast in the car while they get fresh air at the park or knocking on Morenoâs door.â
Dak smiled. âIâd have sympathy if you were in my truck, but youâve got AC.â
âI canât believe you still havenât fixed that damn thing. You must lose ten pounds of water on your daily commute.â
Dak didnât bother responding. Sheâd talked more about her AC in the last week than she had in a decade. âLook. Iâm going to talk to street workers who get more than their fill of men every day, and Iâm going with Weaver. Theyâll be squirrelly enough with the two of us. Three is overkill.â She tried to keep her tone even. Having to justify her movements to anyone didnât sit well. She liked Garrity, but his desire to follow protocol and not rock the boat with Charnwood was prohibitive. Coloring outside the lines was part of the job for her, and more and more, it was becoming clear that Garrity didnât share that proclivity. Hamiltonâs time at the Academy couldnât pass by fast enough. Heâd shown that he was more than happy to follow her lead.
âWhat am I supposed to tell Charnwood if he asks for an update?â
She grabbed her bag and headed to her office door. âThe truth. Weâre laying the groundwork to flip the wife. Itâs a delicate situation, which will take finesse and time.â She shrugged. âBesides, the tire tracks came back from near where Beasleyâs car was dumped. They were a match for the ones at the empty house opposite the Keyesâ homeââ
âTires which could be from several thousand trucks. Itâs thin, Farrell.â
Dak sighed and clenched her jaw, aware that every minute she spent explaining her actions became ten minutes in hellish traffic.
