When Rachel got to the front gate, a dark-haired man in his mid-twenties stood guard. Sheâd met him a couple of times before, but had trouble remembering his name. And as she approached, the young guyâs brow wrinkled.
âHey, Rachel. What are you doing up here?â
Of course, he knows my name. Now I really feel like a jerk.
âHey there. I was hoping you could open the gate for me so I could stretch my legs. Iâm feeling a little cramped being here in the camp.â
The guard scratched his head. âIâm really not supposed to let anyone out.â
Scoffing, Rachel crossed her arms. âWhat? Am I a prisoner?â
âNo, no. Nothing like that. Ethan just doesnât like us leaving the camp unless weâre in pairs.â
Rachel understood Ethanâs reasoning but found it ridiculous the hassle she had to go through just to walk outside the camp. âIâm just going over to the pier. Please open up the gate.â
The guy sighed, lowering his head and shaking it. He then opened the gate, mumbling something under his breath.
Patting him on the back, Rachel said, âEverything will be okay. I promise.
âIâm gonna tell Ethan you threatened me or something if he gets mad.â
Rachel rolled her eyes and walked out of the camp.
The sun was out without a cloud in the sky, and no snow fell. But there was still well over a foot sitting on the ground, and each step Rachel took buried her boots in it.
A short walk from the campâs walls was a large pond that stretched several hundred yards across. It was plenty large for some fishing boats to be out on it in the summer, and could easily be mistaken for a lake if you werenât looking for the edges of it. Of course, now, the lake was frozen over.
Rachel walked toward the pier, and as she stepped onto it, she saw something peculiar off to her left, on ice where trees had previously shielded her view.
A zombie stood out there, unable to keep its footing on the ice. Rachel watched the thing fall, and when it finally stood again, it stumbled back down to the ice.
âWhat the hell?â she mumbled to herself.
âItâs been out there for weeks now.â
Rachel jumped at the voice, turning around to see Ethan approaching her. She exhaled, putting her hand over her fast beating heart and shaking her head.
âSorry,â Ethan said. âI didnât mean to scare you.â
A small laugh escaped Rachelâs mouth. âI donât know if I believe that.â
Ethan laughed. âMind if I join you?â
Rachel shook her head, even though she had come out here to be on her own and think outside the confines of the cabin. But she knew, especially after talking to Mallory, that sheâd have to speak to Ethan sometime today. She looked back out toward the zombie on the pond.
âWhy havenât you taken it down yet? Seems like it might be the safe thing to do, just in case. Hell, if anything, it would be good target practice for someone.â
Ethan joined her at the end of the pier, putting his hands on the wooden railing and staring at the flailing creature.
