Chapter Nineteen

Rika

I awakened, confused.

Bright light was shining in. Was it morning?

Ho-o-ly—

That was as far as my brain got because the drapes were open and Nick was walking back to the bed, naked and gorgeous.

I swallowed hard and cleared my throat, searching for suitable post-coital conversation. “How long was I asleep?” I asked.

“Only twenty minutes or so.”

It was good sleep, though. I’d never been into power naps, but maybe there was something to them. I felt like I could leap over buildings and stop runaway trains with my bare hands.

The air conditioning kicked on and the cool air hit my skin.

I checked and found I was completely uncovered.

“Oh, my God!” I grabbed the sheet and pulled it over me. “How did that happen?” I remembered tugging the sheet over me, then relaxing into Nick’s shoulder before I conked out.

“It mostly slipped off of its own accord when I got out of bed.”

“Mostly?”

“Yep.” He walked back to the bed.

“And why didn’t you cover me back up? You knew I...” I wasn’t sure how to word the rest. I hadn’t confessed the true reason I wanted the drapes closed.

“I wanted to see you.”

My mind raced. How long had the drapes been open? Did he have time to examine me for imperfections?

Ugh! The thought of it made me queasy. “Kind of pervy, considering I was asleep.”

He climbed into bed, stuffed an extra pillow under his head, then turned on his side. This meant I had to look up at him, just like when we were standing.

Annoying.

I stuffed the fourth bed pillow under the one I’d been using, putting us at the same level.

“Tell me,” he said, “how’s it perverted to want to look at the woman I just made love to?”

His choice of words caused the thoughts to go all floopy in my head. But it was true. He really had made love to me.

It was a lot to process. I let my eyes drift to his collar bone.

He slid his hand up my jaw then lifted my chin with his thumb until my gaze met his.

I couldn’t decide if his constant insistence on eye contact in the bedroom was endearing or irritating.

He took in a long slow breath, then exhaled just as slowly. “Rika, what’s wrong?” He seemed really, truly concerned about me. “Did something happen to you? Before?” He swallowed hard. “Did somebody do something to—?”

“No!” I said firmly. “Nothing like that ever happened. Does something have to have happened just because I don’t want to flaunt myself in front of you?”

Nick kept his gaze steady on me but seemed to be considering my question. “Yes,” he finally said. “When someone as beautiful as you are doesn’t want the man she’s sleeping with to see her, something has to have happened.”

Damn it. If I didn’t give up something, Nick was going to keep thinking I had an awful abuse story from my past. He didn’t deserve to carry that concern around.

But I didn’t want to tell him the pitiful tale of my life as a blimp.
