We didn’t talk about anything that had happened last night. In fact, when I woke up, Tony was in the kitchen with coffee and breakfast ready for me.

“I think we should go over to the neighbors. They aren’t alive and we can use the eggs.”

A nod was about all I could manage this early in the morning before I’d had a coffee to wake up.

“How do you know they aren’t alive?” I mumbled as I took that first sip of heaven.

He pointed to the window where the neighbors were lined up against the fence trying to come in our direction.

“Why aren’t they going after their own live animals? What is going on over here that has their attention?”

“A cow must have wandered up from the back pasture because it’s just out of their reach but is caught in the other fencing. I thought I’d go out there and give the poor thing a chance as well as take out my neighbors while they’re just right there and easy to reach.”

“Sounds good to me.” I agreed. “Food first. Then we can pack the car with everything possible before we head back there. What should we put the chickens in? How will we keep them at the apartment?”

“Oh, I’ve got a plan for that.”

Tony beamed as if he’d completely forgotten his grief from the day before.

I wasn’t going to complain, but I wanted to keep an eye on him. If he was this up and down, he might have some issues that could cause him to have a psychotic break. Didn’t hurt to be too careful.

“We’ll put them up on the roof. There’s only a couple of spots for access and we can also use some of the planters up there to grow some vegetables. My ex had a small garden outside for the kids to learn from.”

“Uh, but what about the ZITs in our building? Just because they haven’t come out doesn’t mean they won’t at some point. We might even have a few people that are alive.” Even as I said the words, I felt really doubtful we’d find anyone.

“ZITs?”

“Oh, yeah, when I talked to my cousin, Luca, he called the zombies ZITs. Zombie Infected Things.”

“So, you can go pop some ZITs.” Tony burst out laughing, “That’s genius.”

“Of course, you’re a guy and all understand the same language.” I shook my head. “Figures.”

“Well, that’s what I’m going to call them from now on. No more zombies or dead for me.” He seemed to be having a good moment. Let’s get this stuff loaded and get out of here. I think I might just have found something to live for.”

“Huh? Calling the zombies ZITs is a reason to live?” Seriously confused, I looked at him bewildered.

“Nothing else has made me laugh. I was this,” He held up two fingers with no space in between, “to killing myself last night. There wasn’t anything else to live for.”

“I guess you might know that though as the gun I was going to use, disappeared.” He gave me a very pointed look.
