Ten minutes later, I was back in my suit, my armor, and I was ready for battle. And I was fortunate that DD didn’t have clearance to film in here.

No evidence.

Milestone was singing “Needing You” when I eased through the crowd and made my way to the table. Amara was swaying back and forth with her eyes closed. I had to lean down and get close to her when I said, “May I have this dance?”

Her eyes opened, raising to meet mine. Her mouth dropped open. I held out my hand. She waited a beat before she finally put me out of my misery and placed her hand in mine.

I lifted her to her feet, finally letting myself look over at her date. The look on his face almost made me burst out laughing; the man was a mix of shock, confusion, and anger.

I have to admit, this was some potentially grimy shit I was doing. The fact that we were all strangers to one another was the only thing saving me here. Dirty macking…eh, maybe you could call it that if you were so inclined. But I could live with that. It would be worth it.

I led her to the dance floor, finding an empty spot close to the stage—and away from her date. My hands went to her waist; hers went to my shoulders. It was friendly, but that would change soon.

“I can’t believe you just did that,” she said in my ear.

I grinned. “Me either.”

“I can’t believe any of this. It’s surreal.”

I nodded. “I wish I could explain it to you.”

We swayed to the music as I let my arms tighten their grip around her waist.

“Are you enjoying your date?”

“Which one?”

I laughed. “Touché. I’m sorry for how chaotic this all is. I just…”

“I know. I think I get it now.”

“Oh, really? That’s promising.”

“It’s not.” She laughed. “I’m not promising anything. Just saying I understand.”

“So you feel it too?”

“I feel…something. Yes.”

The laughter died on our lips as our eyes met. I wondered if the something she felt was identical to mine.

Desire.

The strongest desire. A pull so intense, I wanted to take her right here on this dance floor in front of all these people.

“What do you feel, Amara?”

Her eyes bounced around the room. “Attraction.”

Now we were getting somewhere.

It had all happened so fast. I knew I needed to ease her into this, but my body was raring to go, and it wasn’t gonna let me take my foot off the gas.

So I resolved to stay quiet and let the music sing my thoughts.

“What do you feel, AJ?”

That was a curve ball.

“You don’t wanna know,” was my answer.

“I asked. Why wouldn’t I wanna know?”

“It wouldn’t be appropriate.”

She chuckled. “You’ve already stalked me and stolen me away from my date. I think we passed appropriate a long time ago.”

“Fair enough.” I stared down at her lips. “I feel like I want you all to myself, and it ain’t fair that I had to share you with him all day.”

“But—“

“And I know the show set that shit up, but I’m talking about me and you and this moment right here.
