Naeria knew she should rise and face the day, but she wasn’t in the mood to do so. This day could do without her for a change. It had been centuries since she had slept in and it was long overdue. She more than earned it.

Besides, the world was safer without her today. When she returned from St Giles, the sky had lightened already with the sun threatening to break through. She knew she was taking a big risk being out that late but her rage, fuelled by blind jealousy, couldn’t allow her to face Mildred and the many questions she was sure the blonde would have for her. To her relief she had found Mildred slumbering, albeit restlessly and with dark smudges under her eyes, obviously having waited up for her. Instead of joining her in bed, Naeria had sought out the privacy and isolation of her coffin. She was still lying awake when Mildred stirred and came to stand by the coffin. The blonde remained there for a few minutes and Elena could sense the other woman’s distress. After a while, soft footsteps moved up the stairs and the heavy door locked behind Mildred.

She closed her eyes and cleared her mind of everything until only an empty, emotionless void remained. This was what her life had been for most of her existence. With no idea what to expect, she had simply lived to fill the emptiness with fleeting pursuits, all of them mostly aimed at feeding her growing bloodlust.

The latter was the reason she was keeping herself hidden from the world. It had been ages since she had lashed out and allowed her rabid nature to surface. All thanks to her darling Mildred. But the previous night had been an emotionally taxing one. First, the massacre in Paris, where she suspected her bloodlust had been sparked, followed by the news that Elena might be lost to her. Even now her jealousy picked at her sanity. It stumped her how she could’ve lived for so long without experiencing such irrational rage and helplessness at the idea of not being able to be with someone.

Was this really what being in love was like? If so, it terrified her. She presented a deadly risk to everyone around her, especially those who dared to get too close to the one she perceived to be hers. Across the world, a multitude of people fell in love without the overwhelming need to destroy anyone who came into contact with their mates. Naeria refused to believe that she was the exception to the rule. If the latter was a possibility, then she needed to fix herself first before she could think of getting close to Elena.

As if the dreaded jealousy wasn’t enough of a threat to her sanity, she had to discover that creature hunting on her turf. Vampyres were not allowed around the general public. As far as she knew, these creatures only operated in vampire clan domains. They were creations of a master vampire to keep his underlings in order.
