Chapter

Nineteen

The Wainwright Grove

Hornbeam, Illinois

22 May 2025, 8:15am

Jake sat on the edge of his bed, staring at the contact he had open on his phone. Fiona O’Rourke. They hadn’t settled on a day for him to visit her in Topeka, and given the griffon threat, that possibility seemed unlikely for the near future.

He sighed.

He didn’t want to do this, but he felt like there was no other choice.

He tapped the number he’d marked ‘Personal’ and lifted his phone to his ear.

Fiona answered almost immediately. “Hi, Jake. How are you?”

“I’m doing well enough, Fiona. I was calling about—”

“Jake, please forgive me. I know I sent you that huge list of possible dates we could meet up, but it’s been nine kinds of crazy here. I’d love to have lunch with you or something, but it’s going to be a bit difficult to make that work right now.”

Holy cow. Jake wasn’t prepared for the flood of relief that cascaded through him. “It’s totally okay, Fiona. That’s why I was calling. My mentor got called away to consult on a case that turned out to be a series of griffon attacks, and she doesn’t want me leaving the Wainwright Grove until she can get the griffon sorted.”

There was a pause just long enough to process as a pause. “There’s a griffon on the loose? Shit… that explains so much. Hang on. How did you know it was okay to discuss the supernatural with me? It’s kind of a no-no to expose the poor, wittle humans to it.”

He chuckled… couldn’t help it, really. “My mentor told me you have at least some Fae ancestry, so I figured it was okay.”

Fiona sighed. “Yeah… okay. Fair enough. Do me a favor, though, please? Don’t bandy that about too much. The government already knows because of my military service, but I try not to advertise it.”

“Deal. I won’t mention it again.”

“And your mentor is right. I sensed the Wainwright Grove from the grocery store parking lot that day we met. I doubt even a full clutch of griffons would attack the grove to get a mage, even if he is an exceptional Tri-Sphere. Hrmmm… tell you what. One of my clients in this case from hell is a Spatial mage, and I have a rare opening this Saturday evening. Since you’re not supposed to leave the grove and since I could feel it all the way in Hornbeam, how about I portal over to you for dinner? That diner not too far from the grocery store was rather divine.”

Jake turned the idea over in his mind. He couldn’t deny the appeal of having dinner with her, and if she was right about how large of a presence Beauregard cast (not that he was going to tell her about Beauregard), the town would probably be safe enough.

“All right. You talked me into it. The diner is Marci’s Diner, and what time would you like to meet?”

“Let me text my client and see if she’s available for hire to portal me there and back, and I’ll let you know.
