Not quite the same brazen feeling the next morning in the cab on the way to work. More one of dry mouth, pounding head, and fingers crossed that no one had filmed any part of what I did the night before. I left the cab meter running while I dashed into one of my favourite cafés to grab the largest coffee they had and something, anything, to eat that had bacon in it, greasy, hangover-curing bacon.

The lunch shift was about to start, but I knew they could do without any of my input, so I was going straight to my office to search the employee profiles and find out who I had busted my moves on last night. Of course I assumed he would be doing the same thing to me this morning. I would leave the next move to him, but I thought it at least polite to know his name.

As soon as Cinderella saw me she rushed up to me

‘Why haven’t you been answering your phone?’

‘Oh damn, it must have gone flat.’

Cinderella was gripping onto me so tightly that I nearly lost my grip on my much-needed bacon-and-egg roll. Before I had a chance to ask her to ease her grip and ask what the weird and worried look on her face was about, I heard Mr Brooks’s voice boom out across the restaurant floor.

‘Ramona Rawlings, I’m going to need to see you in your office straight away! Cinderella go back to work — everyone go back to work.’

I looked around and everyone’s eyes were on me. Cinderella leant in to say something to me, but before she could start Mr Brooks boomed another directive from where he stood.

‘Cinderella, I said: back to work.’

She gave me a reassuring squeeze of my arm and went to the office.

‘Ramona, your office now, please,’ Mr Brooks said firmly.

When I first saw Mr Brooks I thought it might have something to do with my award, but his tone and Cinderella’s arm-squeezing were quickly filling me with confusion and a creeping sense of dread.

‘Ramona!’ Mr Brooks was obviously impatient at my lack of movement, and this time he said my name as more of an order than a request.

As I followed him to my office, my head swirled with different ideas and scenarios about what this could be about. I didn’t really have time to analyse it, because we were already at my office and I was being directed to a chair in front of my desk. There were already two people sitting in the other seats; the male didn’t look around, but the female I would be sitting next to turned and gave me the filthiest look I think I’d ever seen.

‘Breathe, breathe,’ I told myself.

While Mr Brooks made himself comfortable at my desk, I thought this might be my opportunity to say something. However, looking around and sensing the very serious vibe in the room, I decided to stay mute. I tried to glance sideways to see who the guy was
