Immortality

By Patricia Harris

Do not offer to me

Immortality,

For nothing but a curse

do I see.

An end of life is a peace

Well earned,

Time to lay off the weight

Of a world undeserved.

Though the thought behind

A life without end,

Might appeal to some,

To my eyes,

The afterlife is bliss.

Catching A Friend

By Jennifer Elliott

She ran up the hill to the blue two story house. Emma was already outside playing. She always wore the same blue gingham dress and tan apron all the time but Sal just figured she liked it.

"Hiiii Emma! How are you doing today?" Sal asked."You'll have to catch me to find out!"

She ran away and Sal chased after like she had all summer. She could never figure out why she couldn't catch her but Emma could always get her. Why was her touch always like a cool wind?

They ran around the house and just inside the woods behind the house. They tried to not go too far in the woods because of the drop off and train tracks.

Every so often Emma would tap Sal's shoulder and giggle as she ran away. Sal tried to catch up as they ran and giggled all evening. It seemed like her hand would go through her arm whenever she got close. As it got dark Emma handed Sal a pretty blue handkerchief with white and yellow flowers as they stood in the front yard.

"Let’s play Marco Polo and I promise to let you catch me." Emma said with a mischievous smile.

The smile made Sal nervous but she complied. "Marco", she said and she heard that Emma had already moved but never heard her steps. She walked toward the sound. When she got where she thought she was closer she said it again, "Marco!"

"Polo!" She heard from farther away. She continued past the house by touch into the back yard.

"Marco!"

"Polo!" From even farther away. She carefully walked closer and found she was just outside the woods when she accidentally kicked a tree.

"Marco!" She heard a train on the tracks off in the distance.

"Polo!" She heard Emma within the woods. She started to work her way into the trees. The underbrush scrapping her legs. After a few steps she yelled to be heard because the train was closer, "Marco!"

"Polo!" She heard from so close in front of her. She started running through the underbrush thinking about tackling her friend. The first time winning would be so cool. Suddenly there was no more ground and the train horn blared right in her ear as she plummeted and hit the ground. The last thing she felt was the metal of the train engine.

After the train passed. She got up and ran to Emma. She wrapped her arms around her and said,"I finally got you!"

Emma said, "We can play forever," as she pointed at the prone form on the tracks.
