CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Katie stared at the video screens as if her life depended on it. The room she and the others were in felt perfectly safe, so she wasn’t actually worried for herself. She was worried about Eric. And the fact that she wasn’t getting any specific psychic nudge was driving her mad. Not that her psychic skills had helped her much over the years. But if they were ever going to be an advantage, now would be the time for them to work.

Still, all she felt was a vague sense of unease, the knowledge that things weren’t right and danger lurked nearby. But that was it. Nothing that could help Eric and Rea.

She watched Eric come back into view, after he’d gone into one of the rooms not monitored by a camera, and released a breath. She found herself holding her breath every time he was out of sight, only to relax a fraction when he reappeared. Rea and her dogs were making quick work of the eastern wing, the dogs taking the lead into rooms more often than not. But Eric was on his own, with no help from animals with heightened senses.

She trusted he knew what he was doing. He’d survived until now, hadn’t he? Wiping her damp palms on her trousers, she tried to convince herself all would be well. But there was more going on than just the grinluk. There was the “other” monster that was causing the storm. He hadn’t clarified, which frustrated her no end even though she knew there hadn’t been time for lengthy explanations. And when she’d pressed Gregory—who she was sure knew exactly what the “other” monster was—he told her to ask Eric.

But she got the feeling from both Eric and Gregory that whatever this other thing was, it was more dangerous than the grinluk. That was not a comforting thought.

As she watched Eric ease into yet another room, she allowed a quick glance at some of the other screens. Both Gregory and Geraldine were following the progress of the hunt, too. They would tell her if something happened. But she still found herself studying the other screens whenever Eric was out of view. She held the two-way in a tight grip, ready to alert him if she saw or felt anything at all. She glanced back at the camera showing the door Eric had walked though, then scanned the other screens again.

And something, a movement maybe, or maybe just a changing in shadows, made her stare closer at one of the screens. She pointed to the location. “Where is this in the house?”

Geraldine answered. “Third floor, corridor outside our two largest guest rooms.”

“Which wing?”

“West.”

Where Eric was searching. But he was still on the second floor, working his way back toward the front of the house.

“Did you see something?” Gregory asked.

She continued to stare at the screen. “Not sure. Maybe not.”

But that tingling along the back of her neck had started. Her other senses quieted, leaving her psychic one open and buzzing.
