Chapter Thirteen

Fuck, fuck, fuck.

Outside the library, back in the basement hallway, Noah sought out a quiet corner and faced the wall. He willed his erection to disappear and forced himself to think of all sorts of unsavory things to accomplish it. Dead fish. Smelly feet. Coffee that’s grown cold.

They’d had a couple of moments back there, very confusing moments, and they’d left him rock hard. As he focused on his breathing, his dick settled down again.

What the actual fuck?

First, Susannah had asked him about the fundraising gala with that coy look in her eyes. Then she’d agreed to attend with him. Even more surprising was the sexual tension in the library just now. She’d been on the verge of kissing him. Had he imagined it?

No. Noah was almost forty years old. He wasn’t some horny kid, misreading the signals. Besides, he understood Susannah’s signals better than most things. He’d had plenty of time to learn them and appreciate their nuances.

Nevertheless, her words still rang loud and clear in his mind, much clearer than any nuance.

No muddying the waters.

Had she changed her mind? Would she even tell him if she had?

There was only one course of action, as far as they were concerned…whatever “they” even were, at this point.

Let her come to you.

It would be hard, when every particle in his body screamed for her, but he was determined to respect her wishes. There was no other choice. If she wanted him, she would have to say the words.

Noah headed back upstairs, toward his office. There was plenty to occupy him there. They were in the midst of hiring a couple of new teachers, one for Italian diction and another for acting and stagecraft. He’d promised to call a couple of patrons back, as well. And he’d made it a priority to secure a new government grant for students who needed financial assistance. A near-bottomless pool of bureaucracy awaited him. He shouldn’t have any excuse to dwell on thoughts of Susannah.

Even though all he wanted to do was dwell on thoughts of Susannah.

When he got to the main floor, he glanced down the hallway leading to the practice room stairway.

A flash of long black hair down the hall caught his attention.

Ava?

It couldn’t be. She was supposed to be studying from home.

When the person with the long hair turned the corner, he glimpsed the distinctive shaved patch near her ear. Definitely Ava. He didn’t know any other students who wore their hair the same way. Oblivious to his attention, she headed toward the practice rooms.

No!

The hallway was busy with students, and Noah didn’t want to call out and alarm anyone. Quickening his pace, while trying to look calm, he headed toward the practice room stairs. A couple of students called out to him, but he dodged those conversations as politely as possible, promising to catch up with them later. He made it to the door, shoved it open and ran down the stairs.

Even though the upstairs hallway had been busy, the practice room hallway was strangely quiet.
