Chapter Eleven

Andrei

Asia was in his home.

He still couldn’t believe it. With all the unexpected shit going on today, her presence was the most shocking thing of all. When he reached the room Boris was supposed to be staying in, he twisted the knob and opened the door, but he didn’t step inside.

He didn’t know if she was the shoot first, ask questions later kind of lady or not. That wasn’t the only reason he didn’t step inside. Once she saw him, he would have to own up to the lie he’d told her.

And then he’d have to own up to the fact that today was his wedding day. He was more afraid of her finding out about the wedding than he was of her finding out he worked for a crime organization.

He eased the door open a bit more but still didn’t step into the room. He leaned his head against the door, hoping to hear her moving around inside. He was trying to get a feel of where she was in the room. All was silent. Well, here goes everything.

“Asia,” he called out. “I know you’re in here. It’s Trent.”

For a second, she didn’t respond. Andrei looked behind him, making sure he was still the only person in the hall. The hall was clear. He was just about to call out to her again when her voice filled the air.

“Trent? Is that you?” She pulled the door open. She held the doorknob in one hand and a gun in the other. “What are you doing here?” she whispered loudly.

He stared from her face to the gun then back to her face. “I was just about to ask you the same question.”

Her gaze followed his to the gun she held. She quickly put the weapon behind her back. Out of sight did not mean out of mind.

“I’m on security detail,” she told him.

This little liar. “Oh, yeah. Who hired you?”

“Andrei Kuzmin.”

She said his name with such confidence that he couldn’t help but smile.

“Oh, he did?”

“Yes. But that’s beside the point. Go away. I’m working. We can talk later.”

Andrei shook his head. “We will talk now.”

“Trent, I really have to work.”

“It doesn’t look like you’re working to me. It looks like you’re hiding in a dark room.”

“Um, well...” she stared around the room. “Well,” she said again when she faced him. “I’m guarding the man who lives in this room.”

“You’re guarding the man in this room?”

“That’s what I said.”

“Where is he?”

“He’s sleeping.”

Such a damn liar. Still, he wanted to see how far she’d take this lie.

“I just saw him downstairs,” Andrei told her.

Her eyes widened briefly before she schooled her expression into a look of nonchalance.

“Impossible,” she told him. “I was just downstairs. He wasn’t there.”

“He was out on the back patio.”

“Back patio?” Her eyebrow raised.

“Yeah. There are four back patios on this property.”

“Four?” she muttered, more to herself than to him. “Are you sure?”

Andrei nodded. “As security, you should already know that.”

“I only saw two on the...” her lips snapped shut.
