From the personal log of Spiro Walsh, Nazerian Abatan Security Command Officer 3rd rank during the Trial of Cassad the day after the Reading of the Charges.
"You know everybody went on and on about that visor the Merc who brought in Cassad was wearin'. That visor with those damn holographic ghost eyes. But I was there, down on the arena floor after the first attempt on Cassads life failed. The Merc had his visor knocked off and had just taken out four of those assassins by himself when we finally got to them. And his and my eyes met...in that moment before he realized I was friend and not foe. Let me tell you; I found myself wishin to the Almighty that he'd put that visor back on, cause catching his eye... it was like being stared down by an all-beast..."
Chapter One
NEW BEIA
New Beia, formerly known as Esara, the one-time capital of the Sumatran Republic, is now the official home world of the New Regime. Coalition forces forged their agreement here after the start of the Wars of the Blade.
Itâs a standard terran class world, terraformed long ago to meet human requirements.
The Median Belt became their first an easiest won battleground during the revolution; there was hardly a shot fired. Most of the worlds here were long tired of Cassad rule and when the outer territories made their first push the New Regime took full advantage and âliberatedâ the sector.
Itâs a blue and white world...lots of cloud cover...heavily settled so thereâs very little natural vegetation. I expected that Iâd be directed to one of the orbiting stations but as I approach my contact sends me a comm.
âYouâre directed to the Nezerian Tower, Abatan city. Landing protocols are being sent to you now.â Her holo comes through clear and itâs the first time I get a look at her face. Sheâs a lot younger than I thought or at least appears to be, pretty too.
âNezerian Tower,â I sub vocalize to the C.O.P., the Computer Ops Program, and the G-Det holographic display zeroes in on the landing site. The tower is...quite a site. Built on the foundation of the Nezerian Mountains, which are some of the biggest mountains in the known, the Nezerian Tower is one of the tallest planet bound structures ever built. The upper levels extend past New Beia's troposphere and into the mesosphere where they connect to trans-orbital elevator lines of several low orbit space facilities.
And itâs big; the tower has the mass and size to host ten different cities within its walls each with a population of a few million citizens. Itâs so big that it has three different space ports, the biggest at its base but the other two were actually built on the upper levels.
âAbatan City Space Portâ my contact confirms. The highest-level city, the highest-level space port... ok. I begin my approach and drop my ship, War Child, into the atmo.
Damn...the tower is big! I could probably make my way there without instruments.
