Part III: Endgame
He was huffing and puffing by the time he ascended the stairs and was on the castle’s rooftop. He was overweight by at least 30 lbs., and any physical exertion always reminded him of this fact.
Matters were only made worse by the clunky suit of armor that he was wearing. No longer was he in Old Man Gunther’s basement; heck, no longer was he in his hometown. He was somewhere extraordinary, somewhere that probably didn’t even exist in the same universe.
At the top of the stairs, two giant wooden doors awaited him. They were the kind seen at the entrance of the renfair he and his dad attended every two years or so, only these were the real deal. The sword and shield hanging on each of the giant doors weren’t decorations, but actual weapons that could be used on a battlefield.
“Wow,” Cory said.
He felt like a hero, like someone who was accomplishing much more than just beating out some stupid game. He felt on top of the world.
With this confidence brimming inside of him as brightly as the suit of armor he was wearing shone, he pushed open the double doors.
The crowd broke into applause as the knight stepped into the arena, and Cory couldn’t believe it. After years and years of trying to gain approval of his peers, here was an entire coliseum full of people applauding for him.
The hero. The winner. They weren’t chanting his name, but he closed his eyes and imagined they were for a few seconds.
When he opened them, a set of double doors, similar to the ones he had gone through, opened on the opposite side of the stadium. A king with his royal family and royal entourage came through it. There were other knights in suits of armor like his own, and a queen with a red dress that floated behind her like an aura, and then a princess with a smile that was too beautiful to be real.
In fact, all of the royal family appeared too jovial to be real. If you touched them, you’d feel flesh, but the expressions on their faces were plastic-like.
A red carpet appeared between them when Cory wasn’t looking, and his legs moved underneath him as if he were on a treadmill. At the same time, the king broke from the royal family and approached him. He moved rigidly, almost like an animatronic robot.
“Sir Knight,” the king said, approaching him, “I am the King of the Board. I see you have ascended the top of Castle Light.”
Cory bowed down on one knee. “Yes sir, I have conquered the Board of Doom, and now I ask that you end the game.”
Just like his legs had been, his lips seemed to be running on a script.
The light shining down on the rooftop was swallowed up and replaced by darkness. Cory stood up out of his bow and saw the King continuing to smile, as if he were unaware of the sudden change in lighting.
Then, the force that had changed it made sure he and everyone else knew.
