Chapter XVI
Rythân Dar made it back onto the flat ground of the barren plains and was making her way back toward the rise of skulls when she noticed riders up ahead. As they drew closer she could recognise Merydan and Kryssa riding at the front of the procession, slowing her horse and allowing them to meet her half way. As her daughters approached she noted the disapproving look shared by both of them. They were angry that she had chosen to enter Dark Soul alone, that she hadnât taken them with her but as a Mother she dare not risk either of them upon Merydanâs gamble. The horses met on the arid plains, drawing to a halt, Mother and daughters facing each other, the army of ragtag troops reining in obediently at the rear.
âYouâre angry.â Rythân Dar began.
âAngry doesnât even begin to cover it.â Merydan replied. âYou were supposed to meet with the Commanders before making any decision instead you placed us all in danger. We were prepared to risk everything to mount a rescue.â
âAs you can see, it was not necessary. Did you inform every one of your outrageous proposition?â
âWe did.â
âAnd?â
âAnd it is insanity itself, Madam.â General Sterroth thundered as he rode forward intruding upon the private conference. âWe came here to fulfil your plan of destroying your sibling whilst he is vulnerable. Now you intend to have us fight alongside his dark army.â
âDid my daughter explain the change of circumstances to you General?â
âShe did and it seems to make more sense to me to allow Mor Gaâ Deeth and this Black Circle to fight it out among themselves and when itâs all over we ride in and take the heads of those still left standing before they can recover.â
âAn excellent plan General except for one small detail; numbers. The Black Circle has been gathering a vast army and they stand a very good chance of beating my brother without putting up much of a fight. If they are allowed to win you may witness them usher in a whole new age of sorcery without much use for mortal men.â
âForgive me my Lady but isnât that also your brotherâs plan?â
âItâs a matter of degree, General. Did Merydan not explain to you the entire plan?â
âSomething about it would be easier to defeat The Black Circle allied with Mor Gaâ Deeth than run the risk of them winning and be forced to face them alone.â
âGo on.â
âIf we win, Mor Ga Deethâs own forces will be severely depleted making it easier to destroy the Lord of Dark Soul once and for all. So you plan on betraying our ally?â
âHe expects it, Mor Gaâ Deeth himself has declared this a temporary truce as we now both share a common enemy.â
âThen he agreed?â Merydan enquired excitedly.
âHe agreed. He has given us permission to enter Dark Soul.â
There followed murmurings in the ranks and strong feelings of mistrust and trepidation at the suggestion.
âWe had better decide quickly. Now that Faldragon has fallen The Black Circle will
