CHAPTER ELEVEN

We need to move quickly if we hope to rescue Luna, but I am frozen in place. Worming its way through shoe leather and cotton socks, the earth summons me. I feel its pull at the soles of my feet, and the entrapment is as strong as a riptide. I know I am standing on land, but my body feels weighed down, my muscles loose, as I am lost to the depths.

Luna doesn’t feel the weight of my heavy limbs or the uncertainty of my mind, so she calls out to me, beckoning me to save her. Her voice is strained, her tone shattered. She shrieks as she says my name, screams as she begs for her release. I know she is crying even though I can’t see her anymore.

The steady thump of hurried footsteps swirls within the darkness, twirling around me like a ribbon…or a noose.

The sound comes from all around me. From behind. From my sides. Even from the distance, where Luna fights for her life against a threat she could never escape. Not without help. Not without us.

My gaze is glued to the forest, to the very spot Luna just stood. I can still feel her essence, smell her sweet aroma. The heat from her body lingers long after she is gone.

I blink, and Malik is standing in front of me, blocking my view. I do not move to look around him, because I know she is not there. So I close my eyes, inhaling deeply, and I smell her. I don’t stop pretending she’s still here until Malik shakes me awake.

I yank free from his grip, stumbling backward, freed from the earth’s mighty grasp.

“They took her,” I hiss.

Malik ushers me to calm down, but I am seething. Every step he takes toward me, I take two more backward. The last thing I want to do is harm my leader when my frustration already has a target.

I whip around to find it, coming face-to-face with Jeremiah. He is a few feet away from me, standing near Holland, and I can’t help but snort at the sight of them. It wasn’t so long ago that I was accused of being childish because I cared more about rescuing Jasik than anything else.

“They took her because you didn’t do your fucking job,” I shout, pointing an accusatory finger in his direction.

My words escape me before I can process what I’m saying, and even I gasp at my tone. Every word I speak is icy and sharp. Jeremiah winces before trying to cover up the fact that I have wounded him with words alone. But he fails. His eyes betray his pain. A mortal is in danger because of his foolishness, and as a vampire, that’s not an easy cross to bear.

He has an eternity to live with his bad choices, and if I were a better person, I wouldn’t stoke the fire. I’d end his torment. But I’m not a good person. I’m too angry to be good. So not only will I stoke this fire—I will watch it burn.
